Senator Gwen Margolis Scholarship (Journalism + Media)
Awarded for Spring 2026
Gwen Margolis was the first woman president of the Florida Senate from 1990-1992. She later became a county commissioner for Miami-Dade County until she returned the state senate in 2002, where she served until 2008.
For consideration, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- a student (undergraduate or graduate) pursuing any major within the Lee Caplin School or Journalism & Media or School of Communication during the award period.
- Must have financial need as established by FIU’s Financial Aid Office.
- Undergraduate with a Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must be enrolled full-time (12 credits undergraduate or 9 credits graduate) during the award period
- Submit a 2-page typewritten (double-spaced) essay about your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future
submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media or School of Communication faculty preferred).
Be a citizen of the United States, a U.S. lawful permanent resident or an international student on an aid eligible visa.

- Please submit an essay which discusses the reasons for your chosen profession; and where you see yourself in the future? Must be a minimum of 2 pages, double spaced.
- Please submit scans of all transcripts from institutions in which you have taken courses, including FIU (official or unofficial from school's web page).
- Please submit a copy of current Panther Degree Audit (PDA for FIU students). All documents should be submitted as PDF.
- All applicants must submit a writing sample (school newspaper story, class paper or equivalent).
- Please submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (faculty preferred).
