Henry Milander Public Service Scholarship – Criminal Justice
Mayor Henry Milander, a WWI veteran, served as the Mayor of Hialeah from 1942-1944 and from 1947-1974. He remained in office until the day he died at age 75 in 1974. Mayor Milander was also a former Hialeah City Councilman (1935) and as a longstanding Mayor, who created several new parks within the City of Hialeah. He was often referred to as “the workingman mayor… a businessman who shows respect for the people he serves.” In honor of Mayor Henry Milander, this award is available for upper division undergraduate (juniors or seniors) and masters level students in the MS criminal justice program who demonstrate the potential for civic leadership and a sincere interest in commitment to public service.
For consideration, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
• Be a fulltime degree seeking undergraduate junior or senior majoring in Criminal Justice or a masters level student in the MS Criminal Justice program. Priority consideration will be given to undergraduate students, then graduate students.
• Be a high school graduate from Hialeah, Miami Lakes, or Miami Springs (proof of residency and high school graduation required).
• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and full-time enrollment during awarding term(s).
• Submit a 1-2 page typed (double-spaced) letter of application explaining their commitment to public service and potential for civic leadership, which may include past and present employment, volunteer/internship endeavors, careers aspirations, and reasons for pursuing a major in criminal justice.
- Students must maintain fulltime status and a 3.0 cumulative GPA while holding the award.
- Award is open to US citizens, granted permanent residents and international students on an F1 visa, to be eligible for FIU based awards
