Kevin A. Hill Dissertation Improvement Scholarship

The Kevin A. Hill Dissertation Improvement Scholarship was created to benefit graduate students in the Department of Political Science and International Relations who are enrolled in a course of study with a focus on American Politics. Professor Kevin Hill was a professor of Political Science at FIU for twenty-four years with a passion for American government particularly southern politics and Florida politics. Although Professor Hill began his career as an Africanist, he will be remembered for his unique ability to analyze the complexities of American political behavior which inspired many students throughout his career.

Award Amount $1,000.00 each for two students during Spring 2022

  • Applicants will submit a proposal (1-2 pages) that details how they intend to use $1,000 to improve the quality of their dissertation.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be in good academic standing in the Political Science Ph.D. program (minimum 3.0 GPA)
  • Have passed a first field American Politics comprehensive exam, and
  • Have an approved D-2 form on file.

Conditions: Any published works aided by the scholarship should acknowledge the Kevin A. Hill Dissertation Improvement Scholarship.

Reporting: Within 18 months of scholarship receipt (or graduation, if sooner), the student will submit a 1-page report to the Graduate Program Director on how the money was spent to improve their dissertation.

Note on disbursement: A processing fee is charged for scholarship disbursements and the final amount received by the student may be less than $1,000 as a result.
