Janet Chusmir Memorial Scholarship

The Janet Chusmir Memorial Scholarship Endowment fund was established in 1991 in memory of Janet Chusmir, former executive editor of the Miami Herald. She was the paper’s first female editor and guided the newspaper to two Pulitzer Prizes. $1,000.00 awards available to incoming high-school seniors, community college transfer students, undergraduate and graduate FIU students who are pursuing any major within the School of Communication and Journalism.

  • must be enrolled full-time (12 credits or more) during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters.
  • must have earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
  • must be pursuing one of the following degrees within the School of Communication + Journalism (SCJ):
    BA in Communication Arts, BS in Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communication,
    BS in Communication (Journalism, Broadcast Media), BS in Digital Communication + Media,
    MS in Mass Communication.

Supplemental Questions
  1. All applicants must submit a 2-page essay/personal statement (typed, double-spaced) in which you describe your career goals, reasons for choosing the profession, and where you would like to work in the future. Remember, this is often the best opportunity you have to speak directly to the scholarship review committee! Please check spelling and grammar carefully before submitting your essay. Must be a minimum of 1000 words.
  2. Please submit scans of all transcripts from institutions in which you have taken courses, including FIU (official or unofficial from school's web page).
  3. Please submit a copy of current Panther Degree Audit (PDA for FIU students). All documents should be submitted as PDF.
  4. All applicants must submit a writing sample (school newspaper story, class paper or equivalent).
  5. Please submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member (SCJ faculty preferred).
