Dr. E. George Simms Scholarship

The “Dr. E. George Simms Scholarship” has been established in honor of Dr. Simms’ years of service to FIU and dedication to undergraduate student research. This annual $500 scholarship will be awarded, each spring semester, to a first generation undergraduate student in STEM who is currently engaged in research activities and has earned minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Students must submit an essay outlining their academic/research/career goals and reason why they should receive this scholarship accompanied by two letters of recommendation. Applications will be reviewed and selected by members of the FIU McNair Scholars Program committee. The funding for the scholarship is supported through the proceeds from the FIU McNair Scholars Research Conference. Winner will be announced at the National TRIO day celebration on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

Eligibility:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Enrolled full-time
  • First generation college student
  • Currently participating in STEM research and creative work with faculty
  • Expresses an interest in pursuing graduate level research
  • Essay Question (500 words): Explain why your research is important today and how your research relates to your personal and professional goals.
